What to bring for a summer walk? walking boots with good ankle support, waterproof jacket and trousers, spare layers of clothing, a hat and gloves (the mountains can be very cold even at the height of summer) food for lunch, and snacks for extra energy throughout the day, plenty of water to drink a small personal first aid kit waterproof rucksack liner (we can’t rely on those beautiful sunny days always being around) trekking poles can help ease the strain on those knees In summer, on those hot sunny days it is important to stay hydrated so plenty of fluids are needed as well as; sun cream, sun hat, sun glasses a flask with a warm drink is great addition to your rucksack on those chillier autumnal days a head-torch with spare batteries is a useful addition,for walks in early spring and late autumn, although we always aim to finish walks in daylight. What to bring for a winter walk? Rucksack Waterproof Jacket and Trousers Sturdy walking boots Fleece or equivalent insulation layer Sun Protection (glasses, cream, hat) Ski goggles Lunch and Snacks Water Bottle / Hot Drink Warm gloves and Warm Hat Down or Synthetic Jacket Warm walking trousers Personal First Aid Kit Insurance Documentation Transceiver, Probe and Shovel (available for hire) Snowshoes and Poles (available for hire) How will I find you at the meeting point? Look out for the Steve White Mountain Adventures logo. Don’t worry we will be there early and keeping an eye out for everyone. How long will the walk last? We would expect to be out in the hills for most of the day. For most walks this will typically be 6 to 7 hours, including stops. Harder, more challenging walks may last longer depending upon distance and the speed of the group. If you are unsure if a particular walk is suitable for you feel free to call and have a chat. What happens if the weather is poor? If at all possible we will always aim to do the walk. However, safety is our highest priority and we will alter the route or day’s objectives if well feel the weather dictates this. Guidance on clothing is included in the ‘What to bring’ section above. In the event of extreme weather conditions necessitating cancelling the walk altogether, we will contact you as soon as possible to discuss alternatives or alternative dates. What happens if I need to cancel? Our cancellation conditions in respect of refunds are described fully in our Terms and Conditions. In the first instance please email us at stevewhitemountaineering@gmail.com to let us know. If you need to cancel within 24 hours of the event start time, please contact the me directly using the contact number provided with the booking acknowledgement. Are there a minimum number of bookings? In most instances I am more than happy to run the trip with a minimum of 1 person. We will advise you at least five days before an event if it is being cancelled due to the low number of bookings. If we do have to cancel you will get a full refund or the opportunity to transfer your booking to another event. How fit do I need to be? The fitter you are, the more you will be able to enjoy your event. However, we move at a pace comfortable for the group, appropriate to the difficulty of the walk, and according to the conditions. The walk description provides more detailed information about a specific walk. If you are unsure, please call and have a chat with us. What safety equipment will the leader carry? I am first aid trained and will carry a first aid kit. In addition, I will also be carrying a group shelter and a limited amount of spare equipment for use if necessary. Do I need insurance? I hold professional liability insurance, but you should to take out your own personal accident/cancellation insurance that includes mountain rescue cover. If you already have insurance cover, check that it covers you for the type of activity you are undertaking. Do you take children? Having worked with groups from both Primary and Secondary schools, I am normally happy to take suitably experienced and properly equipped children, if accompanied by a parent or guardian. Please check with me the age suitability of your children for the type of trip you have chosen before booking. |
